📐 Installation tip: Snap a chalk line from the high end to the low end using your calculated drop measurement. Use this line to position each gutter hanger at the correct height for consistent slope along the entire run.

How to Calculate Gutter Slope
Proper gutter slope ensures water drains toward the downspout without pooling or overflowing. The standard recommendation is 1/4 inch of drop per 10 feet of gutter run — enough for steady drainage without rushing.
Gutter Drop Formula
Total Drop (inches) = Gutter Length (ft) × Slope (in/ft)
Slope per foot = Slope per 10 ft ÷ 10
Example: 40 ft gutter at 1/4 inch per 10 ft:
Slope per foot = 0.25 ÷ 10 = 0.025 in/ft
Total drop = 40 × 0.025 = 1 inch total drop
High end sits 1 inch higher than the downspout end.
Example: 40 ft gutter at 1/4 inch per 10 ft:
Slope per foot = 0.25 ÷ 10 = 0.025 in/ft
Total drop = 40 × 0.025 = 1 inch total drop
High end sits 1 inch higher than the downspout end.
Slope Guidelines
- 1/8 inch per 10 ft (minimum): Barely adequate — prone to standing water in heavy rain
- 1/4 inch per 10 ft (recommended): Standard industry recommendation for most roofs
- 1/2 inch per 10 ft (steep): Use for large roof areas or heavy rainfall regions
💡 Pro tip: For gutters longer than 40 feet, consider adding a second downspout in the middle with the gutter sloping toward both ends. This prevents overflow during heavy rain and reduces the visible sag of a long gutter run.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the correct slope for gutters?
The recommended gutter slope is 1/4 inch of drop for every 10 feet of gutter run. Some contractors use 1/8 inch minimum or up to 1/2 inch for steeper pitches. Too little slope causes standing water; too much causes water to rush past the downspout.
How do I calculate gutter drop?
Multiply the gutter length in feet by the slope per foot. For 1/4 inch per 10 ft slope (0.025 in/ft) on a 40-foot run: 40 × 0.025 = 1 inch total drop from the high end to the downspout end.
Which direction should gutters slope?
Gutters should slope toward the downspout. With one end downspout, the entire run slopes toward it. With a center downspout, the gutter peaks in the middle and slopes toward both downspouts. Always slope away from the house fascia at corners.
How much drop per foot for gutters?
Standard is 0.025 inches per foot (1/4 inch per 10 feet). The minimum is about 0.0125 inches per foot (1/8 inch per 10 feet) and the maximum practical slope is about 0.05 inches per foot (1/2 inch per 10 feet).
What happens if gutters have no slope?
Gutters with no slope collect standing water, causing mosquito breeding, rust and corrosion, wood rot on fascia boards, ice dams in winter, and eventual overflow leading to foundation damage. A minimum slope of 1/8 inch per 10 feet is essential for proper drainage.
